RIDING IN THE ALPS

High-quality, sustainable cycling apparel from Biehler

Biehler Cycling is more than just a brand or a company. It’s a team. The bike community and the Saxony-based cycling apparel producer share a passion for cycling.

The Biehler family’s goal when founding their company in Chemnitz in 1993 was to develop and produce highly functional, ultra-lightweight sports undergarments for extreme requirements. The company was acquired by Chemnitz native and textile engineer Steffi Barth in 2004 amid mounting pressure to take the next step in the company’s development. Cycling was the way forward. Design and production of high-quality, sustainable bike clothing became the mission.

“We don’t just want to make the world greener. We want to make it fairer in social terms, too.”

The company has a clear philosophy, combining traditional textile industry practices with innovative materials and cutting-edge design features. “We believe everyone has the right to work with dignity and under healthy conditions. That’s why we produce most of our items at our own plant in Limbach-Oberfrohna. A small portion comes from tested and accredited producers in Portugal and Italy,” says Sascha Winkler, co-owner of Biehler Cycling and Steffi Barth's son.

Biehler’s credo? Doing business responsibly. Sustainability is a key factor throughout the production cycle. The fabrics ordered are either certified to have been produced responsibly with an eye to resources or consist of recycled materials. The company is scrupulous about ecofriendly packaging. If a person falls and damages their clothing, Biehler offers a crash replacement service, in which the customer sends in their damaged clothing for repairs. After all, you don't always have to buy something new.

Biehler has been marketing its own collection for about four years now. Before that, the company built experience with cuts and functionality in the team sports segment. But manufacturing and selling bike clothing isn’t all the company does. It has also founded its own bike community, SYNDICATE – global cycling club, where bike racing fans can connect, plan rides as a group, and take advantage of various benefits offered by the shop. Activities take place all over Germany. Biehler’s goal as a team is to really connect with customers. “Activation events” held when new contracts are signed with cooperating retailers involve excursions and other community activities for bike fans, employees, and friends.

Designs, styles, and items are made in the same quantities for ladies and gentlemen.

Women’s cycling is an especially important subject for the company: “There are so many women in Chemnitz and around Saxony who love to bike, but they often lack a platform to fully embrace their hobby. Biehler provides targeted support to help women ease their fears of this male-dominated sport. In addition to mixed rides, Biehler also organizes rides for women only,” explains Theres Klein, who is in charge of sales and marketing at Biehler. “We also try to use the same design for our bike apparel for women and men. A few years back, most of the women’s jerseys you would see – if you could find them at all – were purple or pink. That’s totally outdated now.”
